Inspiring results in China

The Fred Hollows Foundation is playing its role in a ground breaking cataract elimination program in China, which has already restored sight to thousands.

With support from The Foundation, the Jiangxi Provincial Bureau of Health launched the ‘Bright and Smile Initiative’ in May 2009, with the goal of eliminating a backlog of approximately 200,000 cataract cases by July 2010.

In the first 9 months of the program, approximately 120,000 people received cataract surgery.

These remarkable results would not have been possible without The Foundation’s commitment to training in Jiangxi Province.

Since 1998, The Foundation has supported training in cataract surgery, management and referral for 74 County level doctors, 103 nurses, 56 hospital administrators and 3,812 village doctors across 58 Counties of Jiangxi Province.

Most of the surgeons and nurses involved in the 'Bright and Smile Initiative' have received some form of training through The Foundation.
